(= estrogen (USA)) A type of hormone that induces oestrus (‘heat`) in female animals. It controls changes in the uterus that precede ovulation, and is responsible for development of secondary sexual characteristics in pubescent girls. Some tumours are sensitive to oestrogens. See oestradiol.
