  1. Ultraviolet
Electromagnetic radiation in the wavelength range of 4 to 400 nanometers.
    Found on http://www1.eere.energy.gov/solar/solar_

  2. ultraviolet
Electromagnetic radiation at wavelengths shorter than the violet end of visible light; the atmosphere of the Earth effectively blocks the transmission of most ultraviolet light.

  3. ultraviolet
Light that is so blue humans cannot see it. A band of the electromagnetic spectrum between the visible and the X-ray. Photons of ultraviolet light are more energetic than photons of visible light.

  8. Ultraviolet
Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is invisible. It is a form of electromagnetic radiation, with a wavelength just shorter than that of visible violet light. UV radiation can be used to treat skin conditions like acne. Humans use UV light from the Sun to produce vitamin D3 (used in the kidneys and liver). ...

  10. Ultraviolet
(UVA,UVB) Ultraviolet light is light that we cannot see. But it is an important part of sunlight. Ultraviolet light is divided into UVA, UVB and UVC. UVC cannot get through the ozone layer to reach us. But UVA and UVB can both increase the risk of skin cancer, including malignant melanoma. Sunbathin...

  15. ultraviolet
Continuous spectrum beyond the violet end of the visible spectrum (wavelength less than 400nm), and above the X-ray wavelengths (greater than 5nm). Glass absorbs UV, so optical systems at these wavelengths have to be made of quartz. Nucleic acids absorb UV most strongly at around 260nm, and this is the wavelength most likely to cause mutational damage (by the formation of thymine dimers). It is the UV component of sunlight that causes actinic keratoses to form in skin, but that is also required for Vitamin D synthesis.

14 February 2012

This day in history:
/calendar/ February 14 is Valentine's Day. Although it is celebrated as a lovers' holiday today, with the giving of candy, flowers, or other gifts between couples in love, it originated in 5th Century Rome as a tribute to St. Valentine, a Catholic bishop. The first Valentine card grew out of this practice. The first true Valentine card was sent in 1415 by Charles, duke of Orleans, to his wife. He was imprisoned in the Tower of London at the time. Cupid, another symbol of the holiday, became associated with it because he was the son of Venus, the Roman god of love and beauty. Cupid often appears on Valentine cards. read more
