  2. Tokamak
The leading magnetic confinement fusion concept named after a Russian word for toroidally (or doughnut) shaped magnetic field. The field the long way around the torus is the toroidal field and is the main confining field for the particles. The toroidal field is produced from a set of poloidally constructed electromagnets. 6. Tokamak
A `tokamak` is a machine producing a toroidal (doughnut-shaped) magnetic field for confining a plasma. It is one of several types of magnetic confinement devices and the leading candidate for producing fusion energy. The term `Tokamak` is a transliteration of the Russian word `Ã?¢Ã?¾Ã?ºÃ?°Ã?¼Ã?°Ã?º` which itself is an acronym made from the Russian words: ``Ñ‚Ã?¾`Ñ€Ã?¾Ã?¸Ã?´Ã?°Ã?»ÑŒÃ?½Ã?°Ã‘Â? `Ã?ºÃ?°`Ã?¼Ã?µÑ€Ã?° Ã?² `Ã?¼Ã?°`Ã?³Ã?½Ã?¸Ñ‚Ã?½Ñ‹Ñ... `Ã?º`Ã?°Ã‘‚ушÃ?ºÃ?°Ã‘...` (`to`roidal...

  8. tokamak
An experimental arrangement for achieving controlled nuclear fusion. In a tokamak, two superimposed magnetic fields enclose the plasma: this is the toroidal field generated by external coils on the one hand and the field of a flow in the plasma on the other hand. In the combined field, the field lin...

This day in history:
On 9 November 1989 the Berlin Wall was finally breached by jubilant Berliners , unifying a city that had been divided for over 30 years. The 28-mile (45 km) barrier dividing Germany's capital was built in 1961 to prevent East Berliners fleeing to the West, but as Communism in the Soviet Republic and Eastern Europe began to crumble, pressure mounted on the East German authorities to open the Berlin border. At midnight on 9th November East Germany's Communist rulers gave permission for gates along the Wall to be opened after hundreds of people converged on crossing points. They surged through cheering and shouting and were be met by jubilant West Berliners on the other side. read more
