`SN 1006` was a supernova, widely seen on Earth beginning in the year 1006 AD; Earth was about 7200 light-years away. It was the highest relative magnitude stellar event in recorded history. First appearing in the constellation of Lupus between April 30 and May 1 of that year, this `guest star` was described by observers in Switzerland, Egypt, Iraq, China, Japan, and possibly North America.

It was recorded by Chinese and Arab astronomers as being bright enough to see in daylight for 23 days and was visible in the night sky for 653 days. It was located in the Milky Way galaxy at a distance of 6,300 light years, and was likely a Type II supernova. There is also evidence the Mimbres and Anasazi Native Americans saw and recorded SN 1054. It has...

  20. SN 1181
First observed between August 4 and August 6, 1181, Chinese and Japanese astronomers recorded the supernova now known as `SN 1181` in eight separate texts. One of only eight supernovae in the Milky Way observable with the naked eye in recorded history, it appeared in the constellation Cassiopeia and was visible in the night sky for about 185 days. The radio and X-ray pulsar J0205+6449 (also known as 3C 58), which rotates about 15 times per seco...

  21. SN 1572
`SN 1572` or `Tycho's Nova` was a supernova in the constellation Cassiopeia, one of the eight supernovae visible to the naked eye. It was first observed on November 11 1572 by the Danish scientist Tycho Brahe, when it was brighter than Venus. In March 1574 its brightness fell below visibility with the naked eye. Tycho Brahe may not have been the first to notice the supernova; it was probably Wolfgang Schuler, who first saw it on November 6, 1572...

  22. SN 1604
`Supernova 1604`, also known as `Kepler's Supernova` or `Kepler's Star`, was a supernova which occurred in the Milky Way, in the constellation Ophiuchus. As of 2007, it is the last supernova to have been unquestionably observed in our own galaxy, occurring no farther than 6 kiloparsecs or about 20,000 light-years from Earth. Visible to the naked eye, it was brighter at its peak than any other star in the night sky, and all the planets (other than...

  23. SN 185
`SN 185` was a supernova which appeared in the year 185, near the direction of Alpha Centauri, between the constellations Circinus and Centaurus. This `guest star` was observed by Chinese astronomers in the `Book of Later Han`, and may have been recorded in Roman literature. It remained visible in the night sky for eight months. This is believed to have been the first supernova recorded by humankind. The gaseous shell RCW 86 is suspected as bein...
