  2. Parlay
A collection of API standards for telecomms VAS (value added services) defined by The Parlay Group, a.k.a OSA (Open Service Access) in 3GPP and ETSI. Growing from IN (Intelligent Network) technology and standards in telecomms and from developments in application Interconnection such as web services in computing. Parlay supports easy creation and rapid deployment of innovative applications. Parlay defines the Service Network, as distinct from the core network or NSS and its direct support sub systems for business, BSS, and operations support, OSS. Applications which add value reside in the service network and communicate with each other and with longer established subsystems through Parlay APIs. Parlay APIs allows applications to provide functions across disparate networks, for example, a developer can build a Parlay/OSA application that detects when a group of people are free and sets up a conference call, but the people can be on an IS-41 network in the USA, a GSM network in Britain, a UMTS network in Germany and a VoIP network (using SIP) in China (example adapted from `Parlay/OSA - a New Way to Create Wireless Services` Zygmunt Lozinski, IBM).

12 February 2012

This day in history:
/calendar/ On February 12, 1809, Charles Robert Darwin was born at The Mount in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England. Darwin was one of the last of the eclectic scientists who preceded the age of professional specialization. His genius lay in his ability to select, from the facts which he so diligently collected, every relevant point and fit it into his bold and far-reaching theories. He was not the first to advance a theory of evolution; but his massive weight of evidence carried conviction where earlier theorists had failed. He was shy and modest and shrank from controversy, an unfortunate trait in the author of the most controversial book of the century. read more
