Look up: osmosis

  1. Osmosis
The process by which solvent molecules pass through a semipermable membrane from a dilute solution into a more concentrated solution.
    Found on http://home.nas.net/~dbc/cic_hamilton/di

  2. Osmosis
The passage of a liquid from a weak solution to a more concentrated solution across a semipermeable membrane that allows passage of the solvent (water) but not the dissolved solids.

  7. Osmosis
The passage of water from regions of high water potential (pure water or more dilute solutions) to regions of low water potential (more concentrated solutions), across a partially permeable membrane (one that is more permeable to water than to dissolved substances (solutes)), down a water potential ...

  11. osmosis
Osmosis is the flow of a solvent in a system in which two solutions of different concentration are separated by a semipermeable membrane which cannot pass solute molecules. The solvent will flow from the side of lower concentration to that of higher concentration, thus tending to equalize the concen...

  12. Osmosis
The movement of solvent molecules through a membrane from region of lower solute concentration to a region of higher solute concentration.

  13. Osmosis
Diffusion of water through a semi-permeable membrane from a region of low salt concentration to a region of higher salt concentration to equalise solution strength
    Found on http://www.encyclo.co.uk/visitor-contrib

  14. Osmosis
The diffusion of a solvent through a semi permeable membrane from a region of low solute concentration to a region of high solute concentration. The semi permeable membrane is permeable to the solvent, but not to the solute, resulting in a chemical potential difference across the membrane which driv...

  15. Osmosis
the process of passage of the solvent portion of a lesser-concentrated solution through a semipermeable membrane into a higher-concentrated solution until the two solutions are equal in concentration; plays an important role in water distribution in the body

  17. osmosis
The movement of solvent through a membrane impermeable to solute, in order to balance the chemical potential due to the concentration differences on each side of the membrane. Frequently mis-used in the popular press.

This day in history:
The fifth queen of Henry VIII was Catherine Howard. Her father was very poor, and Catherine lived mainly with Agnes, widow of the 2nd duke of Norfolk. Henry was evidently charmed by her and he was privately married to Catherine at Oatlands in July 1540. After some denials the queen herself admitted that this was true; but denied that she had misconducted herself since her marriage. Some fresh information, however, very soon came to light showing that she had been unchaste since her marriage; a bill of attainder was passed through parliament, and on the 13th of February 1542 the queen was beheaded. read more
