  1. Nitriding
Nitriding is a heat treating process that diffuses nitrogen into the surface of a metal to create a case hardened surface. It is predominantly used on steel, but also titanium, aluminum and molybdenum. Typical applications include gears, crankshafts, camshafts, cam followers, valve parts, extruder ...

  2. nitriding
Introducing nitrogen into the surface layer of a solid ferrous alloy by holding at a suitable temperature (below Ac1 for ferritic steels) in contact with a nitrogenous material, usually ammonia or molten cyanide of appropriate composition. Quenching is not required to produce a hard case.

  3. Nitriding
The diffusion of nitrogen into alloy steel to form hard nitrides in the surface layer (typically 250µ). Performed at between 500 and 750oC from a gas, salt bath or plasma glow discharge.

This day in history: The Queen Mary made her maiden voyage, on the Southampton-Cherbourg-New York route, on 27 May 1936. The passenger accommodation emphasised the first two classes, cabin and tourist. The propulsion machinery of the ship produced a massive 160,000 SHP and gave it a speed of over 30 knots. The Queen Mary spent a short time in drydock during July whilst adjustments were made to the propellers and turbines. When the ship returned to service, in August, it made a record voyage from Bishop's Rock to Ambrose light and took the Blue Riband from the Normandie. read more
