Look up: micelle

  1. Micelle
Organised blob of surfactant molecules with all the hydrophobic tails pointing inwards to create a tiny hydrophobic phase. If you try to dissolve surfactant molecules in water, you will succeed up to a point as more surfactant is added, and then any additional surfactant you add will form micelles. ...

  2. micelle
[n] - an electrically charged particle built up from polymeric molecules or ions and occurring in certain colloidal electrolytic solutions like soaps and detergents

  3. micelle
a round cluster of hydrocarbon chains formed when the amount of surfactant in an aqueous solution reaches a critical point. The micelles are able to surround and dissolve droplets of water or oil, forming an emulsion.

  4. micelle
Surfactants in solution are often association colloids, that is, they tend to form aggregates of colloidal dimensions, which exist in equilibrium with the molecules or ions from which they are formed. Such aggregates are termed micelles. See also inverted micelle. IUPAC MANUAL APPENDIX II (1972).

  5. micelle
Micelle is an electrically charged colloidal particle, usually organic in nature, composed of aggregates of large molecules, e.g., in soaps and surfactants. For aqueous solutions, the hydrophilic end of the molecule is on the surface of the micelle, while the hydrophobic end (often a hydrocarbon chain) points toward the center.

  6. micelle
    a) a particle of colloidal size, particularly a colloidal ion; b) a portion of the cell walls of plants in which the chain molecules of cellulose are parallel and/or regularly spaced Category: Botany and zoology

  7. micelle
One of the possible ways in which amphipathic molecules may be arranged; a spherical structure in which all the hydrophobic portions of the molecules are inwardly directed, leaving the hydrophilic portions in contact with the surrounding aqueous phase. The converse arrangement will be found if the major phase is hydrophobic.

  14. Micelle
A micelle (pronounced /maɪˈsɛl/ or /maɪˈsiːl/, plural micelles, micella, or micellae) is an aggregate of surfactant molecules dispersed in a liquid colloid. A typical micelle in aqueous solution forms an aggregate with the hydrophilic "head" regions in contact with surrounding solvent, seques...

  15. micelle
A tiny particle made of substances that are soluble in water and that come together to form a ball-like shape. These particles can carry other substances inside them. In medicine, micelles are made in the laboratory and are used to carry drugs to body tissues and cells.

This day in history: The Queen Mary made her maiden voyage, on the Southampton-Cherbourg-New York route, on 27 May 1936. The passenger accommodation emphasised the first two classes, cabin and tourist. The propulsion machinery of the ship produced a massive 160,000 SHP and gave it a speed of over 30 knots. Despite expectations that the ship would try to break speed records on its first voyage a thick fog destroyed any hope of this. The Queen Mary spent a short time in drydock during July whilst adjustments were made to the propellers and turbines. When the ship returned to service, in August, it made a record voyage from Bishop's Rock to Ambrose light and took the Blue Riband from the Normandie. read more
