Look up: kurtosis

  1. Kurtosis
Is the statistic which describes the degree of peakedness or flatness of a probability distribution relative to the benchmark normal distribution. See Leptokurtic (Leptokurtosis) and Platykurtic (Platykurtosis).

  2. Kurtosis
An expression of the so-called 'fourth moment'. A tendency for a distribution to form a sharp narrow peak in the center (or, when negative, a broad flat plateau). It is a unitless parameter. If the value is positive it indicates that the distribution of the signal has longer tails than the Gaussian distribution (a spikier signal). If the value is n...

  3. kurtosis
a term used to describe the extent to which a unimodal frequency curve is 'peaked'; that is to say, the extent of the relative steepness of ascent in the neighbourhood of the mode Category: Mathematics

  4. Kurtosis
Definition (undergraduate level) For a given frequency function, the kurtosis is a measure of how sharply the function peaks around its mode.<br /> The coefficient of kurtosis is a quantitative measure of the kurtosis; it is γ 2 = μ 4 μ 2 2 - 3 , where μ i is the i th moment of the function about its mean.

  6. kurtosis
An attribute of a distribution, describing 'peakedness'. Kurtosis is calculated as E[(x-mu)4]/s4 where mu is the mean and s is the standard deviation. Source: Hogg and Craig, p 57 Contexts: econometrics; statistics

  7. Kurtosis
In probability theory and statistics, `kurtosis` is a measure of the `peakedness` of the probability distribution of a real-valued random variable. Higher kurtosis means more of the variance is due to infrequent extreme deviations, as opposed to frequent modestly-sized deviations.

  8. kurtosis
(kәr-to´sis) the degree of peakedness or flatness of a probability distribution as compared to the normal distribution having the same variance.

22 November 2009

This day in history:
On Friday, November 22, 1963, President John F. Kennedy was shot as he rode in a motorcade through the streets of Dallas, Texas. At his death, the 35th president was 46 years old and had served less than three years in office. Despite this intimate experience of events surrounding the death of John F. Kennedy, the nation failed to achieve closure. Oswald never confessed, and the facts of the case remain mysterious. The Warren Commission's conclusion Oswald acted alone failed to satisfy the public. In 1976, the House of Representatives' Select Committee on Assassinations reopened investigation of the murder. The Committee reported that Lee Harvey Oswald probably was part of a conspiracy that may have involved organized crime. read more
