  1. Integrins
are the cell surface receptor molecules which match up with parts of the matrix protein ligands to allow adhesion of the cell to the matrix. The attachment of cells to matrix proteins also influences the cells behaviour, by the expression of genes. The integrins are a family of proteins, found doing...

  2. integrins
Superfamily of cell surface proteins that are involved in binding to extracellular matrix components in some cases. Most are heterodimeric with a b subunit of 95 kD that is conserved through the superfamily, and a more variable a subunit of 150-170 kD. The first examples described were fibronectin and vitronectin receptors of fibroblasts, which bind to an RGD (Arg-Gly-Asp) sequence in the ligand protein, though the 'context' of the RGD seems important and there is also a divalent cation-dependence. Subsequently the platelet IIb/IIIa surface glycoprotein (fibronectin and fibrinogen receptor) and the LFA-1 class of leucocyte surface protein were recognized as integrins, together with the VLA surface protein. The requirement for the RGD sequence in the ligand does not seem to be invariable. See Table I1.

  4. integrins
Type: Term Pronunciation: in-te′grinz Definitions: 1. A family of cell membrane glycoproteins that are heterodimers composed of α- and β-chain subunits. They serve as extracellular matrix glycoprotein receptors involved in cell adhesion, the mediation of adhesion of neutrophils to endothelial cells.

14 February 2012

This day in history:
/calendar/ February 14 is Valentine's Day. Although it is celebrated as a lovers' holiday today, with the giving of candy, flowers, or other gifts between couples in love, it originated in 5th Century Rome as a tribute to St. Valentine, a Catholic bishop. The first Valentine card grew out of this practice. The first true Valentine card was sent in 1415 by Charles, duke of Orleans, to his wife. He was imprisoned in the Tower of London at the time. Cupid, another symbol of the holiday, became associated with it because he was the son of Venus, the Roman god of love and beauty. Cupid often appears on Valentine cards. read more
