  4. homeobox
(= homoeobox) Conserved DNA sequence originally detected by DNA-DNA hybridization in many of the genes that give rise to homeotic mutants and segmentation mutants in Drosophila . The homeobox consists of about 180 nucleotides coding for a sequence of 60 amino acids in a protein, sometimes termed the homeodomain, of which about 80-90% are identical in the various homeodomains identified from Drosophila . Homeoboxes have also been detected in the genomes of vertebrates, with about 75% amino acid homology and a similar sequence has been found in the MAT gene of yeast. The homeobox codes for a protein domain that is involved in binding to DNA. Three subfamilies of homeobox-containing proteins can be identified, based on the archetypal Drosophila genes engrailed , antennapedia and paired . Interestingly, linear order within genome maps to order of expression in embryo. This may be required for the transcriptional silencing of certain homeotic genes (see Polycomb > Polycomb).

  7. Homeobox
A `homeobox` is a DNA sequence found within genes that are involved in the regulation of development (morphogenesis) of animals, fungi and plants. Genes that have a homeobox are called `homeobox genes` and form the `homeobox gene family`.

  9. homeobox
A highly conserved DNA sequence of about 180 base pairs near the 3 end of specific homeotic genes; it encodes a DNA-binding domain that allows the homeobox proteins to bind to and regulate gene expression in development. Syn: homeodomain

  10. homeobox
A short stretch of nucleotides whose base sequence is virtually identical in all the genes that contain it. It has been found in many organisms from fruit flies to human beings. In the fruit fly, a homeobox appears to determine when particular groups of genes are expressed during development.

  12. Homeobox gene
Homeobox gene: A gene containing a short DNA sequence of about 180 base pairs referred to as a homeobox. Homeobox genes encode proteins that bind and regulate the expression of DNA in multicellular organisms. The `homeodomain fold` is a protein structural domain that binds DNA or RNA and is thus commonly found in transcription factors. The fold consists of a 60-amino acid helix-turn-helix structure in which three alpha helices are connected by short loop regions . The N-terminal two helices are antiparallel and the longer C-terminal helix is roughly perpendicular to the axes established by the first two. It is this third helix that interacts directly ...

  22. Homeodynamic principle
The `Homeodynamic principle` was a term used byNathan Ackerman, referring to his observations, in the course of family therapy, that families have a basic dynamic, and following an interruption to that dynamic (for example, an intervention by a psychotherapist), the previous family patterns tend to re-emerge, i.e., the family soon returns to its basic patterns, even if those patterns are dysfunctional.

  23. Homeodynamics
`Homeodynamics` is a living systems theory, one of many that have emerged in recent years - which promise to open up new ways of thinking about and understanding our world and ourselves. Below is a quote describing the reason for the origins of Homeodynamics. `Steven Rose`, Professor of Biology and Neurosciences at the Open University, wrote in his book, `LIFELINES: Biology, Freedom, Determinism` (1998 Penguin, p 17): ``HOMEODYNAMICS` - One o...

22 November 2009

This day in history:
On Friday, November 22, 1963, President John F. Kennedy was shot as he rode in a motorcade through the streets of Dallas, Texas. At his death, the 35th president was 46 years old and had served less than three years in office. Despite this intimate experience of events surrounding the death of John F. Kennedy, the nation failed to achieve closure. Oswald never confessed, and the facts of the case remain mysterious. The Warren Commission's conclusion Oswald acted alone failed to satisfy the public. In 1976, the House of Representatives' Select Committee on Assassinations reopened investigation of the murder. The Committee reported that Lee Harvey Oswald probably was part of a conspiracy that may have involved organized crime. read more
