Look up: glycolysis

  1. Glycolysis
Reactions of the Embden-Meyerhof pathway in which glucose is oxidised to pyruvate.
    Found on http://www.pestmanagement.co.uk/lib/glos

  2. Glycolysis
the breakdown of glucose in series of metabolic steps. Energy in the form of ATP is released even if there is no oxygen available as in anaerobic respiration . In the presence of oxygen as in aerobic respiration the breakdown is more complete and yields more energy.

  3. glycolysis
[n] - a metabolic process that breaks down carbohydrates and sugars through a series of reactions to either pyruvic acid or lactic acid and release energy for the body in the form of ATP

  4. Glycolysis
The first stages of cellular respiration occurring with or without the presence of oxygen, in which glucose is converted to two molecules of pyruvic acid.
    Found on http://www.felpress.co.uk/Exercise_Physi

  5. Glycolysis
A complex biochemical process in which one molecule of glucose is anaerobically converted into two molecules of pyruvate and energy in the form of ATP.
    Found on http://www.chemicalglossary.net/definiti

  6. glycolysis
The conversion of a monosaccharide (generally glucose) to pyruvate via the glycolytic pathway (ie. the Embden-Meyerhof pathway) in the cytosol. Generates ATP without consuming oxygen and is thus anaerobic.

  7. glycolysis
<biochemistry> The conversion of a monosaccharide (generally glucose) to pyruvate via the glycolytic pathway (i.e. The Embden Meyerhof Parnas pathway) in the cytosol. ... Generates ATP without consuming oxygen and is thus anaerobic. ... Origin: Gr. Lysis = dissolution ... (18 Nov 1997) ...

  8. Glycolysis
`Glycolysis` is the sequence of reactions that converts glucose into pyruvate with the concomitant production of a relatively small amount of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). The word is derived from Greek `γλÃ?...κÃ?Â?Ã?‚` (sweet) and `λÃ?Â?Ã?ƒιÃ?‚` (letting loose). It is the initial process of most carbohydrate catabolism, and it serves three principal functions: #The generation of high-energy molecules (ATP and NADH) as cellular energy sources as par...

  9. glycolysis
(gli-kol´ә-sis) the anaerobic enzymatic conversion of glucose to simpler compounds such as lactate or pyruvate, resulting in energy stored in the form of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), as occurs in muscle. adj., glycolyt´ic., adj.

  10. glycolysis
(from the article `metabolism`) The transformation of glucose. Quantitatively, the most important source of energy for cellular processes is the six-carbon sugar glucose (C6H12O6). ... The formation of ATP is the reverse of this equation, requiring the addition of energy. The central cellular pathway of ATP synthesis begins with ... ...

  11. glycolysis
The energy-yielding conversion of d-glucose to lactic acid (instead of pyruvate oxidation products) in various tissues, notably muscle, when sufficient oxygen is not available (as in an emergency situation); since molecular oxygen is not consumed in the process, this is frequently referred to as “anaerobic glycolysis” Cf. Embden-Meyerhof-...

  12. glycolysis
A metabolic process that transforms glucose into pyruvic acid or lactic acid in the muscles (or other tissues), for energy production, in the form of ATP (adenosine triphosphate). Glycolysis, also called anaerobic metabolism, takes place when insufficient oxygen is available in an emergency situat...

  13. glycolysis
glycolysis (glīkol'isis) , term given to the metabolic pathway utilized by most microorganisms (yeast and bacteria) and by all “higher” animals (including humans) for the degradation of glucose. Glycolysis means, literally, the dissolution of sugar. The process is a series of c...

22 November 2009

This day in history:
On Friday, November 22, 1963, President John F. Kennedy was shot as he rode in a motorcade through the streets of Dallas, Texas. At his death, the 35th president was 46 years old and had served less than three years in office. Despite this intimate experience of events surrounding the death of John F. Kennedy, the nation failed to achieve closure. Oswald never confessed, and the facts of the case remain mysterious. The Warren Commission's conclusion Oswald acted alone failed to satisfy the public. In 1976, the House of Representatives' Select Committee on Assassinations reopened investigation of the murder. The Committee reported that Lee Harvey Oswald probably was part of a conspiracy that may have involved organized crime. read more
