Look up: glycolysis

  1. Glycolysis
Reactions of the Embden-Meyerhof pathway in which glucose is oxidised to pyruvate.
    Found on http://www.encyclo.co.uk/visitor-contrib

  2. Glycolysis
the breakdown of glucose in series of metabolic steps. Energy in the form of ATP is released even if there is no oxygen available as in anaerobic respiration . In the presence of oxygen as in aerobic respiration the breakdown is more complete and yields more energy.

  3. glycolysis
[n] - a metabolic process that breaks down carbohydrates and sugars through a series of reactions to either pyruvic acid or lactic acid and release energy for the body in the form of ATP
    Found on http://www.webdictionary.co.uk/definitio

  4. Glycolysis
The first stages of cellular respiration occurring with or without the presence of oxygen, in which glucose is converted to two molecules of pyruvic acid.
    Found on http://www.felpress.co.uk/Exercise_Physi

  5. Glycolysis
A complex biochemical process in which one molecule of glucose is anaerobically converted into two molecules of pyruvate and energy in the form of ATP.
    Found on http://www.chemicalglossary.net/definiti

  6. glycolysis
The conversion of a monosaccharide (generally glucose) to pyruvate via the glycolytic pathway (ie. the Embden-Meyerhof pathway) in the cytosol. Generates ATP without consuming oxygen and is thus anaerobic.
    Found on http://www.encyclo.co.uk/visitor-contrib

  7. glycolysis
<biochemistry> The conversion of a monosaccharide (generally glucose) to pyruvate via the glycolytic pathway (i.e. The Embden Meyerhof Parnas pathway) in the cytosol. ... Generates ATP without consuming oxygen and is thus anaerobic. ... Origin: Gr. Lysis = dissolution ... (18 Nov 1997) ...

  8. glycolysis
(gli-kol´ә-sis) the anaerobic enzymatic conversion of glucose to simpler compounds such as lactate or pyruvate, resulting in energy stored in the form of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), as occurs in muscle. adj., glycolyt´ic., adj.
    Found on http://www.encyclo.co.uk/local/21001

  9. glycolysis
(from the article `metabolism`) The transformation of glucose. Quantitatively, the most important source of energy for cellular processes is the six-carbon sugar glucose (C6H12O6). ... The formation of ATP is the reverse of this equation, requiring the addition of energy. The central cellular pathway of ATP synthesis begins with ... ...

  10. glycolysis
glycolysis (glīkol'isis) , term given to the metabolic pathway utilized by most microorganisms (yeast and bacteria) and by all “higher” animals (including humans) for the degradation of glucose. Glycolysis means, literally, the dissolution of sugar. The process is a series of c...

  11. glycolysis
Type: Term Pronunciation: glī-kol′i-sis Definitions: 1. The energy-yielding conversion of d-glucose to lactic acid (instead of pyruvate oxidation products) in various tissues, notably muscle, when sufficient oxygen is not available (as in an emergency situation); because molecular oxygen ...

  12. glycolysis
(gli;kol;u1-sis) The metabolic pathway that converts glucose to pyruvic acid; the final products are two molecules of pyruvic acid and two molecules of reduced NAD, with a net gain of two ATP molecules. In anaerobic respiration, the reduced NAD is oxidized by the conversion of pyruvic acid to lacti...

  14. glycolysis
A process in which glucose (sugar) is partially broken down by cells in enzyme reactions that do not need oxygen. Glycolysis is one method that cells use to produce energy. When glycolysis is linked with other enzyme reactions that use oxygen, more complete breakdown of glucose is possible and more energy is produced.

  15. Glycolysis
`Glycolysis` (from glycose, an older term for glucose + -lysis degradation) is the metabolic pathway that converts glucose C6H12O6, into pyruvate, CH3COCOO− + H+. The free energy...

11 February 2012

This day in history:
On 11th February, 1858, a 14 year old French peasant girl, Bernadette Soubirous claimed to have seen visions of the Virgin Mary at her native Lourdes. She also revealed that the waters of a spring near a grotto in Lourdes had been given healing powers by the Virgin. Eventually, the Roman Catholic church decided that the visions were authentic. Franz Werfel wrote the novel, Song of Bernadette, based on the story of Bernadette's visions. read more
