  10. gel
Compare with colloid. A gell is a sol in which the solid particles fuse or entangle to produce a rigid or semirigid mixture. For example, gelatin dissolved in water produces a sol of protein molecules. When the gelatin is cooked, the protein chains entangle and crosslink, forming a gel which is a mesh of solid protein with trapped pockets of liquid...

  11. gel
Gels are colloids in which both dispersed and continuous phases have a three-dimensional network throughout the material, so that it forms a jelly-like mass (e.g. gelatine). One component may sometimes be removed to leave a rigid gel (e.g. heating silica gel).

  14. gel
Jelly-like material formed by the coagulation of a colloidal liquid. Many gels have a fibrous matrix and fluid-filled interstices: gels are viscoelastic rather than simply viscous and can resist some mechanical stress without deformation. Examples are the gels formed by large molecules such as collagen (and gelatin), agarose, acrylamide and starch.

  17. Gel
A `gel` (from the Latin `gelu` `freezing, cold, ice` or `gelatus` `frozen, immobile`) is a colloidal system in which a porous network of interconnected nanoparticles spans the volume of a liquid medium. In general, gels are apparently solid, jelly-like materials. Both by weight and volume, gels are mostly liquid in composition and thus exhibit densities similar to liquids, however have the structural coherence of a solid. An example of a common g...

22 November 2009

This day in history:
On Friday, November 22, 1963, President John F. Kennedy was shot as he rode in a motorcade through the streets of Dallas, Texas. At his death, the 35th president was 46 years old and had served less than three years in office. Despite this intimate experience of events surrounding the death of John F. Kennedy, the nation failed to achieve closure. Oswald never confessed, and the facts of the case remain mysterious. The Warren Commission's conclusion Oswald acted alone failed to satisfy the public. In 1976, the House of Representatives' Select Committee on Assassinations reopened investigation of the murder. The Committee reported that Lee Harvey Oswald probably was part of a conspiracy that may have involved organized crime. read more
