  1. electromagnet
[n] - a temporary magnet made by coiling wire around an iron core
    Found on http://www.webdictionary.co.uk/definitio

  2. Electromagnet
An electromagnet is a solenoid with an iron core inserted into it. If a current flows in the coil, a magnetic field is generated. All the randomly oriented domains of the iron core then align in the presence of the field of the solenoid. Thus, the core greatly enhances the strength of the electromagnet

  3. Electromagnet
A magnet formed by an inductor having current flow through it.

  4. electromagnet
a magnet which requires current to maintain its field Category: Electrical engineering and energy • a temporary magnet formed by winding a coil of wire round a soft iron core and passing an electric current through the coil Category: Automation (includes telecommunications and computers)

  5. electromagnet
<physics> A mass, usually of soft iron, but sometimes of some other magnetic metal, as nickel or cobalt, rendered temporarily magnetic by being placed within a coil of wire through which a current of electricity is passing. The metal is generally in the form of a bar, either straight, or bent into the shape of a horseshoe. ... Source: Websters ...

  6. electromagnet
noun a temporary magnet made by coiling wire around an iron core; when current flows in the coil the iron becomes a magnet

  7. Electromagnet
An `electromagnet` is a type of magnet in which the magnetic field is produced by the flow of an electric current. The magnetic field disappears when the current ceases.

  10. electromagnet
electromagnet 1. A temporary magnet made by coiling wire around an iron core; when current flows in the coil the iron becomes a magnet. 2. A magnet consisting of a core, often made of soft iron, that is temporarily magnetized by an electric current flowing through a coil that surrounds it.

  11. electromagnet
A bar of soft iron rendered magnetic by an electric current encircling it.

  12. electromagnet
magnet the magnetic field of which is produced essentially by electric current
    Found on http://www.electropedia.org/iev/iev.nsf/

  13. electromagnet
A magnet constructed from a soft iron core around which is wound a coil of insulated wire. A magnetic field is set up when an electric current is passed through the wire, and it disappears when the current is switched off. This creates a magnet that can be turned on and off.

  14. electromagnet
electromagnet, device in which magnetism is produced by an electric current. Any electric current produces a magnetic field, but the field near an ordinary straight conductor is rarely strong enough to be of practical use. A strong field can be produced if an insulated wire is wrapped around a soft ...

9 February 2010

This day in history:
At 7.01pm on 9 February 1996, the IRA ended its 17-month ceasefire with a blast that rocked east London, injured more than 100 people, one critically, and thrust Northern Ireland back into political ferment. After one hour of shock and hectic checking with the security forces who, like the Government, were taken 'completely by surprise', Prime Minister John Major attacked the bombing as 'an appalling outrage'. He called upon Sinn Fein and the IRA to condemn unequivocally those who planted the bomb near South Quay railway station on the Isle of Dogs. read more
