  6. Electromagnet
An electromagnet is a solenoid with an iron core inserted into it. If a current flows in the coil, a magnetic field is generated. All the randomly oriented domains of the iron core then align in the presence of the field of the solenoid. Thus, the core greatly enhances the strength of the electromagnet

  14. Electromagnet
An electromagnet is a type of magnet in which the magnetic field is produced by the flow of electric current. The magnetic field disappears when the current is turned off. Electromagnets are widely used as components of other electrical devices, such as motors, generators, relays, loudspeakers, har...

  16. electromagnet
A magnet constructed from a soft iron core around which is wound a coil of insulated wire. A magnetic field is set up when an electric current is passed through the wire, and it disappears when the current is switched off. This creates a magnet that can be turned on and off.

  17. electromagnet
electromagnet, device in which magnetism is produced by an electric current. Any electric current produces a magnetic field, but the field near an ordinary straight conductor is rarely strong enough to be of practical use. A strong field can be produced if an insulated wire is wrapped around a soft ...

  19. electromagnet
Coil of wire wound around a soft iron core that acts as a magnet when an electric current flows through the wire. Electromagnets have many uses: in switches, electric bells, solenoids, and metal-lifting cranes. This day in history: The Queen Mary made her maiden voyage, on the Southampton-Cherbourg-New York route, on 27 May 1936. The passenger accommodation emphasised the first two classes, cabin and tourist. The propulsion machinery of the ship produced a massive 160,000 SHP and gave it a speed of over 30 knots. Despite expectations that the ship would try to break speed records on its first voyage a thick fog destroyed any hope of this. The Queen Mary spent a short time in drydock during July whilst adjustments were made to the propellers and turbines. When the ship returned to service, in August, it made a record voyage from Bishop's Rock to Ambrose light and took the Blue Riband from the Normandie. read more
