  11. Cyanoalanine nitrilase
In enzymology, a `cyanoalanine nitrilase` is an enzyme that catalyzes the chemical reaction :3-cyano-L-alanine + 2 H2O ightleftharpoons L-aspartate + NH3 Thus, the two substrates of this enzyme are 3-cyano-L-alanine and H2O, whereas its two products are L-aspartate and NH3. This enzyme belongs to the family of hydrolases, those acting on carbon-nitrogen bonds other than peptide bonds, specifically in nitriles. The systematic name of this enz...

  14. Cyanobacteria
(= Cyanophyta) Modern term for the blue-green algae, prokaryotic cells that use chlorophyll on intracytoplasmic membranes for photosynthesis. The blue-green colour is due to the presence of phycobilins. Found as single cells, colonies or simple filaments. In Anabaena , in which the cells are arranged as a filament, heterocysts capable of nitrogen-fixation occur at regular intervals. According to the endosymbiont hypothesis Cyanobacteria are the progenitors of chloroplasts.
