Conjugation between bacteria involves an F+ bacterium (with F-pili) attaching to an F-; transfer of the F-plasmid then occurs through the sex pilus. In Hfr mutants the F-plasmid is integrated into the chromosome and so chromosomal material is transferred as well. Conjugation occurs in many Gram negative bacteria (Escherichia, Shigella, Salmonella, Pseudomonas and Streptomyces ).
