    Union between two gametes or between two cells leading to the transfer of genetic material. In eukaryotes the classic examples are in Paramecium and Spirogyra . Conjugation between bacteria involves an F+ bacterium (with F-pili) attaching to an F-; transfer of the F-plasmid then occurs through the sex pilus. In Hfr mutants the F-plasmid is integrated into the chromosome and so chromosomal material is transferred as well. Conjugation occurs in many Gram negative bacteria (Escherichia, Shigella, Salmonella, Pseudomonas and Streptomyces ).

On 10th February 1996, a computer, Deep Blue, beat Russian Garry Kasparov, the greatest chess player on the planet, and mankind’s place in the order of things was reshuffled. The match immediately became an iconic symbol of the advances made in artificial intelligence and supercomputing. Kasparov has since retired, like Deep Blue, which now resides in a museum. He has become a vocal advocate for democracy in today’s Russia. read more
