Look up: alleles

  1. Alleles
Alternate forms of genes. Because genes occur in pairs in body cells, one gene of a pair may have one effect and another gene of that same pair (allele) may have a different effect on the same trait.

  2. Alleles
Alternate forms of a gene or DNA sequence, which occur on either of two homologous chromosomes in a diploid organism. (See DNA polymorphism.)

  3. alleles
Different forms or variants of a gene found at the same place, or locus, on a chromosome. Assumed to arise by mutation.

  4. alleles
Mutually exclusive forms of the same gene, occupying the same locus on homologous chromosomes, and governing the same biochemical and developmental process. ... (12 Dec 1998) ...

  5. alleles
Alternative forms of a genetic locus; a single allele for each locus is inherited separately from each parent (e.g., at a locus for eye color the allele might result in blue or brown eyes).

  6. Alleles
The different forms of a gene. A and a are different alleles of the gene that determines albinism. Alleles occupy the same locus, or position, on chromosomes.
    Found on http://www.pythons.com/genetic-terms.htm

  7. alleles
(Gk: allel one another) alternative forms of the same gene which can mutate into each other. They lie on the same place on a particular chromosome and affect the same processes.
    Found on http://www.seafriends.org.nz/books/gloss

  8. Alleles
different versions of the same gene (found at the same locus but in homologous chromosomes or in different individuals) that may produce different phenotypes.

  9. alleles

11 February 2012

This day in history:
On 11th February, 1858, a 14 year old French peasant girl, Bernadette Soubirous claimed to have seen visions of the Virgin Mary at her native Lourdes. She also revealed that the waters of a spring near a grotto in Lourdes had been given healing powers by the Virgin. Eventually, the Roman Catholic church decided that the visions were authentic. Franz Werfel wrote the novel, Song of Bernadette, based on the story of Bernadette's visions. read more
