   A uhlan was originally a certain type of Tartar soldier. Later, the term was adopted by the Poles for a mounted soldier armed with a lance, and later still by the Prussians for light cavalry soldier armed with lance, pistol and sabre. They were employed as skirmishers and scouts. Marshal Saxe had a corps of them in the French Army.
