Look up: Retrovirus

  1. Retrovirus
A member of a class of RNA viruses that utilizes the enzyme reverse transcriptase to reverse copy its genome into a DNA intermediate, which integrates into the hostcell chromosome. Many naturally occurring cancers of vertebrate animals are caused by retroviruses.

  2. retrovirus
[n] - any of a group of viruses that contain two single-strand linear RNA molecules per virion and reverse transcriptase (RNA to DNA)

  3. Retrovirus
Retrovirus: An RNA virus (a virus composed not of DNA but of RNA). Retroviruses have an enzyme called reverse transcriptase that gives them the unique property of transcribing RNA (their RNA) into DNA. The retroviral DNA can then integrate into the chromosomal DNA of the host cell to be expressed th...

  10. retrovirus
retrovirus, type of RNA virus that, unlike other RNA viruses, reproduces by transcribing itself into DNA. An enzyme called reverse transcriptase allows a retrovirus's RNA to act as the template for this RNA-to-DNA transcription. The resultant DNA inserts itself into a cell's DNA and is reproduced al...

  12. retrovirus
Any of a family of viruses (Retroviridae) that contain RNA as genetic material and are able to produce DNA copies of their RNA genes, which they incorporate into the host genome. The retrovirus is able to transcribe RNA into DNA with the help of an enzyme encoded in its genome, known as the reverse ...

  14. Retrovirus
A `retrovirus` is an RNA virus that is duplicated in a host cell using the reverse transcriptase enzyme to produce DNA from its RNA genome. The DNA is then incorporated into the host`s genome by an integrase enzyme. The virus thereafter replicates as part of the host cell`s DNA. Retroviruses are env...

This day in history:
The fifth queen of Henry VIII was Catherine Howard. Her father was very poor, and Catherine lived mainly with Agnes, widow of the 2nd duke of Norfolk. Henry was evidently charmed by her and he was privately married to Catherine at Oatlands in July 1540. In November 1541 Archbishop Thomas Cranmer informed Henry that his queen's past life had not been stainless. After some denials the queen herself admitted that this was true; but denied that she had misconducted herself since her marriage. Some fresh information, however, very soon came to light showing that she had been unchaste since her marriage; a bill of attainder was passed through parliament, and on the 13th of February 1542 the queen was beheaded. read more
