  1. RDS
    Radio Data System. It was co-developed by the BBC in the 1980s and virtually all major FM stations now broadcast an RDS signal. RDS offers a variety of features. For example, there is station name ID whereby an RDS-equipped radio displays the name of a station as well as its frequency. And drivers are probably familiar with the traffic feature which automatically alerts you when a station broadcasts traffic news. There is also PTY or Programme Type. This allows you to search all available broadcasts by their programme content - ie news, drama, pop, etc - at the press of a button.

    (Radio Data System) A system that transmits digital data together with audible FM radio signals. RDS displays the name of a station transmitting an RDS signal, and it will find the strongest signal for that station automatically. Its features include: Program Service Name (PS) -- up to 8 characters of station name information; Traffic Announcement (TA) -- a facility to switch automatically to a traffic information bulletin; Alternative Frequency (AF) -- the automatic selection of stronger signals where more than one exists for the same station; Enhanced Other Network (EON) -- automatic switching to another station for the duration of a traffic announcement; Clock Time (CT) -- setting the correct clock time automatically.

    Radio Data System, is a technology that allows to transmit additional useful information to a tuner or receiver. This Information can be: the station name, an outline of the current programme and/or the current time. RDS is only available on the FM waveband.

This day in history:
On 21st November 1974 the Provisional IRA plants bombs in two Birmingham pubs: the Mulberry Bush and the Tavern in the Town. Twenty-one people die and 182 are injured. A few minutes before the explosions a warning had been telephoned to the local newspaper, the Birmingham Post and Mail, but it was far too late. The first Birmingham bomb, at the Mulberry Bush pub in the basement of the Rotunda, a 20-storey office and retail complex and it exploded six minutes after the telephone warning. There was not enough time for police to clear the area. Earlier that year nine soldiers were killed when a bomb exploded on a coach on the M62 near Bradford, while two bombs in Guildford killed four soldiers and injured scores of other people. read more
