A condition in which the lower intestinal tract is completely blocked with a mass of hard meconium and abdominal distension. Infants that are born prematurely are at an increased risk for developing the condition, as are babies that are born to diabetic mothers or those that were treated with magnesium sulfate during pregnancy.
