A rare birth defect that involves the eyes, brain and kidneys. Lowe syndrome only affects males and is caused by an inherited defective gene. A newborn will have cataracts in both eyes that will be treated when the child is a few months old. Although treatment will help some, the child's vision is usually no better than 20/100.
