  1. Ion
An atom or a group of atoms that carries an electric charge.
    Found on http://home.nas.net/~dbc/cic_hamilton/di

  2. ion
An atom or molecular fragment that has a positive electrical charge due to the loss of one or more electrons; the simplest ion is the hydrogen nucleus, a single proton.

  4. Ion
A charged particle consisting of an atom stripped of one or more of its electrons.
    Found on http://www2.jpl.nasa.gov/basics/bsfgloss

  5. Ion
An ion is a charged atom or group of atoms. The charge occurs from a surplus or deficiency of electrons.

  6. Ion
In Greek mythology Ion was the son of Apollo and the Arthenian princess Creusa, whom Apollo raped on the Acropolis. Creusa abandoned Ion at birth, and Apollo took the child to Delphi, where he was brought up in ignorance of his true parentage. In the meantime, Creusa married King Xuthus. After several childless years, they went to delphi to ask advice. Apollo told Xuthus that the first person he met on leaving the shrine would be his son - and that person was Ion. Furious that Xuthus was adoptin...

  7. Ion
An atom that has lost or gained one or more electrons and has become electrically charged as a result.

  8. Ion
An electrically charged atom or group of atoms.

  10. Ion
Electrically charged element, group of elements or particle. Many of the salts in the soil solution exist as ions.
    Found on http://www.pestmanagement.co.uk/lib/glos

  11. ion
(Humans as organisms) positively- or negatively-charged particles - eg positively charged hydrogen, sodium and potassium atoms. Ion charge helps determine a substance's acidity or alkalinity

  12. Ion
An ion is a charged Atom or molecule. The ion is charged because the number of Electrons do not equal the number of Protons in the atom or molecule. If the atom or molecule contains an excess of electrons it will be negatively charged (e.g. OH-) where as if it is depleted in electrons it will have a net positive charge (e.g. H+).

  13. ion
[n] - a particle that is electrically charged (positive or negative)
    Found on http://www.webdictionary.co.uk/definitio

  14. Ion
An atom with one or more electrons in surplus or deficit. Because each electron carries a unit negative charge, if there is a surplus of them the overall atomic charge is a net negative (making the ion in question an anion), and if there is a deficit of them the overall atomic charge is a net positi

  15. Ion
An atom that, because of the loss of one or more electrons, has a positive electrical charge.
    Found on http://www.solarspace.co.uk/Glossary2.ph

  16. Ion
An electrically charged atom or grouping of atoms.
    Found on http://www.shponline.co.uk/glossary.asp?

  17. Ion
An ion is an electrically charged atom or molecule. It may comprise one or more atoms and be positively (cation) or negatively (anion) charged. The number of positively charged core modules (protons) in atoms is identical to the number of negatively charged electrons which encircle the core. An atom is outwardly electrically neutral. An ion is charged by the imbalance of positive charges in the core and negative charges in the electron shell.

  18. Ion
An ion is an electrically charged atom. In a neutral atom, the number of protons in the nucleus is balanced by the number of electrons around the nucleus. If an electron is knocked away from the nucleus (perhaps as a result of radiation), then the atom will be left with a net positive charge. The process of creating ions is called ionisation

25 November 2009

This day in history:
The Royal Suspension Chain Pier was opened on 25 November 1823 with a procession and firework display, but, to the disappointment of the town, without royalty being present. It proved an immediate success with both cross-channel travellers and also with promenaders who were charged an admission of two pence or one guinea annually. The pier also attracted many artists with its graceful outline, including Constable and Turner. read more
